Search Engine Marketing: Why is it so crucial?

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

There are many effective ways to promote your website and SEM is one of them. To improve the website ranking in the search engines, Search engine marketing or SEM is the most effective way. It also describes purchasing paid listings among other search engine related activities. Before, starting with an SEM campaign, knowing the concept and benefits of optimization is always very important and then employs techniques that will bring prospects to your site. Just as when getting browsers to enter your store in the real world, the goal is the same here, convert those visitors into customers.

Why Search Engine Marketing (SEM)?

In today’s Internet and World Wide Web, I’ve noticed that more consumers are turning to search engines to find the products and services and they seek. If you are out to establish a strong base of customers and strengthen your bottom line, making friends with the search engines is the way to go. SEM is a proven technique that has worked wonderfully for business owners looking to increase their website visibility online through the SERPs. Using this effective method will increase your online visibility so that the consumers who are after your products and services will find you very easily. As the method include a great combination of various effective techniques.

In the past few years it has been seen that nearly 85% of website traffic is produced from the major search engines like Google, Yahoo & MSN. Due to these results, almost every online business owner is looking forward with optimization and marketing their websites for search engine traffic and to get most out of it. As we revealed earlier, SEM includes a wide variety of techniques and the most important of all is the optimization.

The most popular and similarly used methods of SEM are mention below:

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The concept simply known as SEO, search engine optimization describes the act of creating web pages that appeal to the search engines. In general, it includes building link popularity and highly important, implementing relative keywords potential visitors are most likely to type into a search engine. These relative targeted keywords are inserted into the body text of the web page as well as in Title tags and Meta tags. SEO can be so effective that other SEM techniques might not even be necessary. However, not every method is required for a successful SEM campaign; but without SEO you just can’t do it.

Pay Per Click (PPC)

There is also an alternative for the people who don’t have time to spend on doing SEO. Achieving high rankings in search engines is not so easy job, so those who don’t have time rely on Pay Per Click (PPC) campaigns for high profile placements. PPC is an SEM technique that focuses on targeted audiences and particularly, generating sales. This is the type of advertising where you pay a predetermined fee when an internet user either clicks or visits your ads.

The key to SEO and SEM in general, is to know how web surfers go about searching for products and services they are interested in. Very rare surfers use industry language to search products or services, so in order to attract them you need to think like your audience. This is the reason, why SEO specialists give more weight on the keyword research. Always remember that whether it’s genuine SEO, PPC or any other techniques, keywords are the key of a successful Search Engine Marketing (SEM).

If I build it, will they come? SEO Matters.

The short answer is no, they won’t. I have lost how many clients have come to me and ask me to build an e-commerce site, but have not put 1 minutes thought into how they will market their website. I had one lady ask if I can get the site live for the next week, because she had a new employee starting to take care of all the orders. I then quizzed her on her marketing campaign, and she looked at me blankly. So I asked again, what was she doing to get all these orders, and her reply was “Well, when the site goes live, the people will place the orders”. To some people this may be misguided, funny, or just plain sad. And in reality it is all 3. This client had spent hard earned money on developing an e-commerce website, and her entire plan to making it work was – Put the site live. Needless to say she was rather shocked when I explained the reality to her. If all you do is build a site and make it live, no-one will visit. How will they find you?

Google, yahoo, MSN and the other engines, don’t just automatically add your site once it is live. To get your site indexed you need to tell them “Hey here I am , over here!”.

To add your site’s URL to Google for indexing visit http://www.google.com/addurl/

To add your site’s URL to Yahoo for indexing visit https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

To add your site’s URL to MSN for indexing visit http://webmaster.live.com/

Once you do tell them your site is live, your site needs to have proper SEO (search Engine Optimisation) for the search engines to give you a decent ranking. And that can take time. To give yourself the best headstart with your SEO, you should consider SEO Elite. This is some pretty powerful SEO software than can help you beat out the competition.

Any online business requires as much planning and attention as a traditional business with a storefront in the town centre. If your thinking of staring an online e-commerce store, you need a proper marketing strategy to get people to you door fast. This might include PPC (Pay Per Click), writing articles, blogging, and many more, but remember if you neglect these, and just hope for the best, your on the fast path to failure. The Anatomy of a Hot Google AdWords Ad

A Google AdWords Ad has four lines:

Line 1: Keyword-rich benefit headline

Before we talk about how to write a great Google Ad, let’s just go back to basics and get inside the head of someone who is using the Google Search Engine. Picture this … your website visitor is interested in finding something on the Internet so they type some keywords into the search engine. Up comes a search engine results page with a list of websites that matched their search terms.

Now, before we go any further let’s look inside the mind of the website visitor.

They have a problem or need.

They think “Aha, I’ll go and find out the answer to that on the net.”

They point their browser to Google.com and they think, ‘Mmmm … what should I type in the search box?’

Chances are, the keywords they type in are the actual item or items they’re looking for. So – let’s say they were looking for something to fix their eczema problem.

What do they type into the search engine?

Maybe they type “eczema treatment”. They press submit and they wait for the search results.

The search results come up and the website visitor scans the listing of results and while she’s doing that, she thinks to herself, ‘Mmm… eczema treatment, eczema treatment, eczema treatment.

Where can I find eczema treatment?’

So what is the best keyword or keywords to put in the headline of your Google Ad?

Yes, you got it – “eczema treatment”. The reason why this is so powerful is because it’s flagging down your reader. The headline is voicing what they are thinking.

For instance:

Eczema Treatment

Eczema Fixed Now

Eczema gone in 2 days!

Here’s another tip – capitalize the first letter of each word in the headline.

“Eczema cured in days” vs “Eczema Cured In Days”

See the difference?

Capitalizing the first letter of each word attracts more attention to the letters within the headline (which is obviously very important when you’re competing with a whole bunch of other ads as well as organic search engine listings).

Great! So you have a strong headline. The next information to include is as many action words as possible, to drive them to your website

Unfortunately there is no space for “how to” headlines or anything cute or catchy. About all you can do is mention the keyword with one or two action words surrounding it.

Line 2: Clear Benefit and Command

Eczema Cured in 2 Days!

Itching and Redness Gone. Try it

Line 3: Features and specifics

Eczema Cured in 2 Days!

Itching and Redness Gone. Try it

FREE. Permanent Results. No Drugs.

Line 4: Website Address (URL)

Always feature the URL in upper and lower case to make it stand out.

EczemaRemedyCures.com and not eczemaremedycures.com

Itching and Redness Gone. Try it

FREE. Permanent Results. No Drugs.
