Turning $10 into a profitable and successful online business

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

If you have ever thought it would be great to start up your own online business but the only thing holding you back was having the cash to start it up, I’d like to share with you how you can do it for as little as $20, and with a little effort, turn it into a profitable success!

The easy way we do this is through Affiliate Marketing

What is affiliate marketing
You may or may not have heard of the term ‘affiliate marketing’ before, but basically it is when you advertise a product or sell for another company’s product through your website, and are rewarded in a commission for doing so.
Many major businesses, hotel accommodation and flight services in particular, have been operating this way for many years, but with the internet becoming an increasingly popular way to purchase products and services, online affiliate marketing has opened up the market so almost anyone can have a slice of the game!

To set yourself up to earn commission from internet marketing, basically you simply purchase a domain name or even set up a basic website and advertise products for companies on your website, and if someone buys through the advertisement or link on your webpage you make a commission on the sale.
This commission may be a couple of percent, or it could be up to 75% of the sale price. Either way, you are basically making money for almost doing nothing!
I say ‘almost’ because like any new business, you have to promote it or you won’t get the visitors, and without visitors you have no sales.
You would be surprised how many people I talk to that just think you set up a website and it becomes an instant money machine. Sorry, but it’s not that easy!
It does require a little bit of work and persistence at the start, which I will mention shortly.

So how does Affiliate Marketing work?
There are a number of forms of affiliate marketing. There is PPC (Pay Per Click ) where you are paid for the number of times that someone clicks on a text link that is promoted on your website. The most common example of this is Google’s Adsense /Adwords campaign.

The way this works is that the person wishing to advertise their product signs up with Google for the Adwords service, so when someone clicks on their link either on Google’s website or a website that has signed up to promote Google’s ads through their Adsense program, the person advertising pays for each click made. Google gets a share and the person advertising gets a share.
Depending on how you set up your webpage can depend on how many clicks the paid Google links receive, but done correctly it can be very profitable, and it is not uncommon to hear of people making hundreds of dollars a day just from Adsense clicks, though as I mentioned it does require the site to be well set up and also receiving plenty of traffic.

The other form of affiliate marketing is signing up for Affiliate programs that sell products or services through banner advertising or coded text links that are placed into your website, which can be tracked by the affiliate company and when someone clicks through and makes a purchase you are credited the commission for the sale. Unfortunately most instances you don’t receive payment for the click itself, so it can takes a few hundred clicks to make a sale, but the commission can also be quite rewarding and usually more profitable that Google Adsense. (Using both together can be even more rewarding!)

The products you can promote cover almost anything, from ebooks, holiday accommodation, flowers, lingerie, credit cards, gym gear, computers, adult products, ipods, web hosting…you name it!

Step 1: Sign up with Affiliate Companies
Simple sign up with one of the related affiliate companies such as:
Commission Junction
Clix Galore
Commission Monster
DGM Pro
Click Bank

There is no cost to sign up, however some require you have a website or at least a domain name, first, which is why the title of this article mentions it will cost you around $10.

Step 2: Set up a basic website
Purchase a hosting account through a reputable web hosting service such as Webcrowd, or Hostgator, which all give you a free domain name as well, for around $10 a month.

Make sure you choose your web name wisely and try if possible to relate it closely to the products you are selling.
For instance I have a couple of affiliate based websites, one is WhitsundayApartments.com.au, which selling Whitsunday Island holiday accommodation, and another is DreamLingerie.com.au, which as you guessed, sells lingerie.
I have others two, but these two are probably good examples as they both bring in quite good commissions. With Dream Lingerie, I receive 25% of everything sold through your affiliate link, and with the accommodation I receive around 8&, however usually the sales are bigger, and it’s not uncommon for someone to book a week or two accommodation at $300 a night, so if you do the math, it’s not bad pocket money for not having to do too much!

The process of setting up a website using affiliate companies is actually quite simple.
As mentioned in Step 1, sign up with the affiliates that you think work best for your domain, and then once you are approved they provide the code to cut and paste into your website which links to the banners they provide, or the text links for the products.
Place them on your website where you think works best to attract people, and then of course test that the link works.

Step 3 – Promote your website
Unless you promote your website you probably will find it a little slow attracting visitors to the website, and without the visitors you won’t make the sales (or commissions)
So, when you set up your website, make sure you download a copy of some search Engine optimisation software , such as WebCEO, which will help you optimize and submit your website to the search engines. It will take a few weeks to see your website on the search engines so while you are waiting, a great way to get people coming immediately is by setting up a Twitter account or other social networks, and search for people that may be interested in your products. Post messages almost daily if you can, and mention your products so that you begin driving traffic to your website. You will soon find this creates a snowball effect and before you know it you have hundreds of people visiting your website every day.
My best marketing tool for DreamLingerie.com.au is the Twitter account I have for the site: twitter.com/fantasylingerie. every few days I submit new products. Each month the visitor numbers are growing, and so are the sales. I probably spend around 15 minutes of my time each day on each promoting them, so it literally is easy money, allowing you to work a ‘real’ job in the day as well.

Making an income from Twitter

Friday, April 17th, 2009

There is hardly a day that goes by without the mention of Twitter.
Twitter has seemingly sprung up overnight and is taking the web world by storm. Everyone is ‘Twittering’ each other, sharing short tales of what they are up to with friends and the world, creating an online social networking phenomenon unlike anything ever seen before.

Why is Twitter so popular?

The answer is simple. Very ’simple’. Twitter is so simple to use and readily accessible. You can Twitter from your computer, Twitter on the bus with your iPhone using one of the many Twitter Apps now readily available.

So what is Twittering?

“Twittering’ is the terminology used by members of the Twitter social network when they communicate. To Twitter you simply log in to your free Twitter account and type a few short lines of what you are up to, and share it with your Twitter buddies. You can become online friends with other Twitter members, read their updates, send them messages and even share photos using TwitPic. If your posts are interesting enough people will want to become your Twitter friend as well and request to be added to your network. Simple!

Making an income from Twitter

So here is the part that you’re interested in! Making money from Twitter!
You can use Twitter as a money-making business networking and advertising tool as well.
MAny of the largest companies such as Virgin, Billabong, Flight Centre regularly post their latest specials, with a link back to that promotion page of their website for readers to follow. By offering ‘Twitter Only’ promotions, they can track the readers that take up the offer. Very simple, effective and free form of online marketing, and the best thing about it is that you are targeting people who are already in your own social network so you know they are already interested in your products or services.
Now, when you post your twitter message to your friends it will show up on their message board, and if their friends are interested in your messages they will also want to become your friend, and your online marketing network snowballs rapidly. It really is free marketing in the simplest form!

But what if you don’t yet have a product or service to sell?

If I told you that you can earn an income from selling a product you don’t even have, would you believe me?
I will tell you how. This is not a con and it’s no big secret. It is very simple!
I will use a case study for an online lingerie store called Dream Lingerie in Australia.
The entire Dream Lingerie online store is a templated site provided freely by Fantasy Lingerie and you simply sign up with them as an affiliate. To do this search the site and find the ‘Affiliate’ link. It costs nothing to sign up and all you need is a domain name and they will set you up your own online store. The current commission for selling their products through your online store in 20%, so a tidy profit if you make a sale. You don’t need to purchase any products or hard sell. You simply have to drive visitors to your website and when they make an online purchase, Fantasy Lingerie ship the products to the customer and you earn your commission, which is paid monthly. Very simple concept and many companies including Flight Centre, British Airways & HotelClub have similar revenue-earning affiliate programs.

Now, you set up your Twitter account to work it’s magic!….

Firstly, customize your Twitter settings to promote your website. You can change the background image, colours etc very easily in Twitter. Make sure your background image has your web address, product images or specials in the design for instant attraction. Professional looking branding is critical.

Once you have done this, start sending Twitter messages to your network promoting the products.
As Lingerie is a product that needs to be visualized, and Twitter can’t directly upload images, use TwitPic and log in using your same Twitter account details and you can upload products and add a product description, which is automatically sent to your Twitter page. Make sure with every product description you mention your web address so people will know where they can view and purchase that product.
Like any marketing, you must do this regularly, so set yourself a goal. Post 4 new products every day, and find 20 new Twitter friends each day to follow you. For people that request to join your network, make sure you send them back a response thanking them, including your website address in that response encouraging them to visit your website.
You will quickly find the number of visitors to your site will triple and sales will soar!
This principle also works with other social networks such as Myspace and Facebook.

Proven Insider Tips to Get More Web Visitors Quickly and Easily

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Believe me, in spite of the current financial turmoil, there hasn’t ever been a better time to generate an online income stream!

And yet it seems that so many budding Internet marketers are finding it hard to break through VNB – the “Visitor Numbers Barrier.”

When I started, I thought there was some magic elixir or secret technique that would transform my visitor numbers! If only I could find THE ONE successful method!

Well, this article is to let you know that while there may be hundreds of ways to get visitors to your website – I’ve selected some of the techniques that work best for me.

And they can work for you, as well.

Because, if there IS a secret of success, it is this: “Don’t rely on ONE way to generate traffic. Become familiar with MANY.” Better to have many visitor doors to your website, rather than just one, don’t you think?

I’m still surprised how many serious Internet marketers neglect the basics. And one of the most basic ways to improve your visitor traffic is to be absolutely certain that your website is listed by the search engines.

Don’t trust the search engine spiders to do your work for you. All the major search engines have detailed and easy-to-follow instructions on site submission, as well as how to create and submit site-maps.

I don’t think Facebook needs a great deal of introduction, does it? But you can mine value for Facebook if you look for opportunities to include your website on information that you provide.

Then, there is what I call the secret power of blogging: search engines LOVE blogs. The search engine spiders thrive on novelty and change, and if you write or post a new entry to your blog every day – or every other day – the search engines will recognize what is going on and begin to rank your website blog higher than a website that doesn’t change its content from month to month. And a high ranking means visitors to your site.

Don’t forget that you can leverage your signature in online communities or discussion groups. If your product is specifically niched, then you know that there are loyal and relevant online communities or discussion groups who want to hear from you.

And, your forum signature could be a goldmine once you have thought through the best way of expressing your product’s unique feature so that readers find your website irresistible.

Would you like your web address to be seen by ten million people in ten minutes? Well, it’s possible – if you’re careful! Because there are three kinds of people: those who love Google Adwords, often known as Pay Per Click, those who hate it – and those who haven’t tried it.

Many people just go nuts trying to get their advertisement absolutely perfect. And, if you don’t read the small print, you could find that your budget is exhausted quickly. But if you follow the guidelines and budget sensibly you could attract many, many hundreds of paying visitors on a daily basis.

Do you remember those kid’s stories where the fairy Godmother tells the child to repeat a word three times for magic to happen? Well, here’s that word: “eBay”, “eBay”, “eBay”.

There – I’ve said it. eBay is perhaps THE most underestimated visitor generating resource. Ignore eBay at your peril. There are many, many resources available on the web where you can discover how to sell products on eBay. Until recently you could sell digital products (i.e. eBooks, which you can download) but the rules have changed and currently you can only sell physical goods, so your eBook will have to be on a CD. Personally, I think it’s a good move, and opens up many possibilities.

Don’t forget that Ezines and Newsletters are the Grand Daddy and Grand Mommy of all website visitor attraction and list building activity. The thing is this – Ezines and Newsletters work!

If you love your niche product, you’ll have LOTS to say about it, and there will be people who want to hear what you have to say. I built a subscriber of almost 3,000 with a business coaching Newsletter.

Another way to get visitors to your websites is to write an ebook. I’m not embarrassed to say that we’re not talking great literature here. We aren’t talking about the Pulitzer Prize. We’re not even talking more than, maybe, 30 pages, double spaced, and size 12 font.

But the fact is this: your eBook will attract visitors to your website single-handedly.

Later, you can provide your eBook to affiliates so that they send visitors to your site as well! If you’re more of an audio expert than a novelist, why not create a podcast? Uh? Well, a podcast is a series of audio files that is distributed over the Internet to iPods and other music players and personal computers. This is the future – and it’s fun!

The fact is, everyone loves information but don’t always find printed pages the best way to get it. If you can provide the same information that can be played on an iPod or similar media player, or a mobile phone, you’re offering a higher value product.

You needn’t start from scratch – you can plug your product or service almost immediately by converting your existing articles or eBooks into .mp3 recordings. (.mp3 is the industry standard audio format that is widely accepted for iPods, mobile phones etc.) Remember, you have, on your hard drive, stuff that you have written, or will write, that you can add value to by converting it into an .mp3 recording.

Again, it’s the basics that are often the key to increasing your visitor traffic, so you might need to shine your light on your meta tags. (To put it briefly, a “meta tag” is used by search engines to allow them to more accurately list your site in their indexes.

To be honest, it works most of the time, but not always! Search engines are always changing their methods, and some use Meta tags a lot, while others don’t, but I would not want to neglect this technique. It is a small piece of the mosaic that completes the whole visitor traffic picture.

How many times have you wanted to speak your mind? Well, now you can – and it’ll help drive visitors to your website. How? Leave testimonials on other people’s sites. This won’t take you a second, but your web address will be around for years. Go for it. It is so simple, and so little done.

Another technique I used to attract visitors was to write a priority email to customers with an attention-grabbing subject such as “The Top Ten Myths In Your Industry.” Or, provide something like this as a freebie. Make certain that there are clear links to your website, and a compelling reason for the reader to visit.

Finally, I don’t think YouTube needs much introduction! It’s simply one of the largest websites devoted to online videos covering every single subject you can think of – and more! So how can you use the power of YouTube to get more visitors? Simply this: upload a video of you talking about your niche.

Many cheap digital cameras have a video option – and you do not need a high-end movie camera. You could get a friend to film you. Or, you could use a built in camera on your PC or Mac, if your model has one. Aim to talk for not much longer than 10 minutes maximum, and sign off with your website address. Again, this is much easier than you would think.

Remember, so many people focus on one traffic building technique, and one only. I hope I’ve shown you that there are many ways – and you should have fun with all of them. My best to you.
